i know there's a diff between subscriptions and accounts and players etc as it can never be a accurate figure. but i mean you kind of get the picture. eq has a surprisingly strong showing, but damn look at some of those other mmorpgs and how badly they did. eqonline adventures? ROFL no wonder they hardly release info on that, i would be put to shame as well.

im not trying to sway you to quit eq, as its already down hill from here and nothing i can say or do can stop its downward plummet :D i mean if you look at the chart you can see it dropping drammatically coincidently when GoD was released so...yeah anyway. see ultima online? its still alive and kicking, but its still considered dead.

check out horizons..hahaha now thats funny.

Final Fantasy XI (Confidence Rating: A)

FF XI has finally laucnched in North America, and according to their latest press releases, the response has been very strong. In fact, for the first time on this chart, EQ is no longer top dog… FFXI announced they had reached over 500,000 active accounts worldwide. It should be noted that there are many Asian MMOGs that claim to have millions of users, but getting good data to compare them to the traditional subscription market is not an easy task. http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml)
Ok worldwide, how many american subscribers?

Kowaru

i thought they were up to 1 million, but can't tell as its off the chart. but anyway can't keep the japanese players out as they are real gamers. thats like saying. ok lets count how many EQ players there are but not count canadians, germans, australians, europeans etc. there are other people who play this game other than americans. same with FFXI, sometimes they refer to anyone as NA but what most times they do is <English>? as thats the other thing people speak, english or japanese.

FFXI will never be as big in america as EQ was. why? prolly has to do with the same reason people will only buy "american cars" :D you know who you are. even though a certin company makes great cars they wont have anything to do with it. its sad but i mean things like that wont change. there's lots of anger and racism in FFXI because of that, because the americans have to start off as noobs while all the jp players are uber and farm all the named.

this thing wasn't about which game is better just kind of interesting to see. EQ is doing good, UO is doing good, Ragnarok online is doing good. but you can see which games are not doing good. and thats all. and they all seem to taper off to a even line, those are the devoted players. but ffxi is the only one that doesn't taper off. well not yet that i can see, but the rest all reach their "peak" and some like swg goes down actually.

Oh I was only pointing it out a per capita difference in each society. Think someone said Lineage had like 1 million subscribers as well? He's right about something, market is saturated now, in north america, but are they ignoring the asian market?

Ragnarok Online (JP) (Confidence Rating: A)
Ragnarok Online is supposedly the second biggest MMOG in South Korea, with well over 2 million subscribers. The game became so popular in Thailand (over 600,000 subscribers there immediately after launch and still growing) it prompted the government implementing of a temporary curfew on late-night MMOG playing. I have been able to obtain good data on their release in Japan, and that is the data I’ve chosen to graph here, with over 300,000 subscribers as of December 2003. Worldwide the numbers are much, much higher – recently they claimed 17 million worldwide with over 700,000 in North America, but I find that latter number difficult to believe. http://www.ragnarokonline.com (http://www.ragnarokonline.com/)
Haha amazing...

i played ffxi. not bad. great graphics. but unless you are playing with a group of friends you already know.. you'll basically playing a roll playing game with no chat. if you want to chat.. all you get is 0001100001101010000120100001010000110001 or in a form of japanese text. cuz you are all alone! might as well bring out your game console and buy rpg game. it's pretty much the same effect. unless you like doing the whole i'm gonna exp my balls off cuz i'm a powergamer type but we aren't all like kowaru :D

Many people have asked about the sources of my data points, as they are not documented. I have considered doing so, but it is difficult to completely verify every data point on my chart. In fact, they sometimes change from version to version.

Most of the data comes from press releases from the companies themselves. Verant/Sony (EQ), Origin/EA (UO), and Mythic (DAoC) have been particularly good at doing this on a regular basis. Much of the rest of the data comes from news articles in a variety of industry magazines and web sites. I have tried to be careful to only select those reports that contain “official” numbers given in response to a reporter’s request for information, but in some cases they are estimates at best. Still other numbers have come from “off the record” numbers given to me by trusted insiders, or in less public forums like the MUD-Dev Mailing List (https://www.kanga.nu/lists/listinfo/mud-dev/). In a few cases where numbers seemed to conflict, I have picked the one that seemed the most reliable and which seemed to fit with the other data. The upshot of all this is that these numbers should not be taken as gospel. They represent the best research to date.As he also admits a lot of his numbers are just guesses without actual facts. When was the last time Sony put out a press release saying the exact numbers they had for any of their games?

I think the last time was PoP when they put out a video saying they had "More than 430,000."

And even if all these numbers are dropping, why aren't the servers getting less crowded? *shrug*

Maybe it's not racism keeping North American's out of FFXI, but the fact they've got more invested in current games and don't like the anime genre. Same reason why EQ isn't very big in Japan or China, they've got their own games. Or are you going to say the asians are racist against American/European games?

arent a lot of country racist about americans?

Look, the simple fact of the matter is that most people here still enjoy playing EQ and don't like being told every other day about how much it A) Sucks, B) is dying, or C) is a bad game.

Those are all opinions, and not opinions shared by the majority of the people here. So why does it constantly need to be said?

There are people who would still enjoy the game if there was only 5 people left playing it, and if they enjoy it who is anyone to tell them they shouldn't? All that really matters is if the people the game are happy in it, and if they are then it's no one elses business to tell them their game sucks and that they should quit.

Feel free to express your own opinion, but don't try enforcing it upon other people and it doesn't need to be repeated constantly. I'm pretty sure everyone here knows who doesn't like EQ by now.

*before i get screamed at about this notice its a question cause ive heard that a lot of people dont like americans for 1 thing or another, yet havent researched this at all*Mikeala, there are stereotypes about every single country out there. I could name a dozens of them, it doesn't always mean they are 100% true or those opinions are shared by everyone.

Quick example, how many stereotypes are there in America about the French right now?

Why do you think those opinions are formed? It really isn't the people, how many of those people who perpetuate those stereotypes have ever actually met someone from France? Let alone a significant number of its population. Those stereotypes come out about from the politics and foriegn policy of those countries more often than not, and the same holds true for world views on the United States.

It's you.

Also, it's "do".

Most of the dialog you've seen relating to EQ's decline and general unworthiness have probably been from Kow. Unless those are the only remarks you've seen, I don't think you can claim ALL negativity is coming from Ranger Players. Incidentially, I can't think of one ranger that hates the class at this point. Everyone has certain details about their own class that they wish were better, but the Ranger self-hate went away a while ago.

holy fuck guys. all i was pointing out that eq hit its prime and it was on a decline. each of the games all hit a peek and just kind of lvled off and thats their hard core players.

when WoW comes out are we going to buy it because of the feed back from beta testers? i had already planned on playing it when i first heard about it. why?? because its made by blizzard. and its a wc theme. same reason i bought FFXI because its made by square and its a ff theme. fuck you all who say ffxi sucks but will buy WOW because of those reasons alone. Thanks for corecting my spelling Semuf. It's not just from Kow, hell go look at some of the ranger boards. Tell me, you leveled a ranger to 65, spent many hours aa'ing/raiding to get item to enhcance your character more.

Whats all the fuss about? I've asked several rangers to enlighten me with what they feel is so wrong with the class or what even drives them to play it anymore.

Only thing I can tell is rangers want to be more like XXX or have the same abiltiy XXX does, well shit so does my cleric, I want to nuke sometimes but if I wanted it that bad I should have been a wizard no?

My point, RANGERS are more vocal about why EQ sucks/is dying than any other class i've seen. My advice? if you hate your character(any class/race combo) quit playing the game.

If your offended by what I'm saying, then sorry but dont spread negativity around cause " your " unhappy about the class " you " chose to play.

" Your " and "You " are not directed at/to anyone indirectly, this applys to anyone who is unhappy with the current character they play

Verant, didn't give you 8 character slots for nothing....

My point was this, statistics may not lie but the gathering and analysis most definately do. Look at Silvio Berlusconi, all you need is money and you too could be the prime minister of your own country.

Berlusconie was indited on numerous counts of murder.

But Tes, every class has complaints, even those that are pretty well off this week. Read any class boards and you'll hear a ton of complaints, I'd even say mages were worst off balance wise untill the last pet patch. And even after they've been pretty muxh fixed, there are still complaints. (And Graffe's certainly is not free of them.) :)

Even pissed off knights dont read knight boards, due to how retarded they get.

When you put a MMORPG in jap hands and on the most popular console ever produced, and give it a race that is only female and portrays the fantasy of every furry fiend around the globe, you're bound to have a large audience.

asians fucking love video games. you go to japan or korea to buy a video game, you dont just get the game, you get a fucking TShirt, a free memory card, and countless other addons just to make you buy japRPG01 over JapRPG02. They take that shit more seriously than americans ever took TV.

Its a different culture, and different environment. the statistics are a nice guideline, but as for realistic numbers, i don't think many are even close, particularly when all the guy has to go by is what the companies themselves say.

I really don't get why people start treating what MMORPG they play like its their religion or political affiliation, trying to skew others into agreeing with their assessment of the current status of each particular game in the genre.

Just play what you like, and don't play the shit you dislike. its quite simple.

Taid

have to agree dep there. its a game that you supposed to enjoy. if you don't feel the urge to play it, don't. otherwise, try to enjoy it.
