Just heard NOFX's version... SUCKS! Totally murdered the song. I'll give them this though, they covered the craziness, but in a manic way not melancholic. I wonder what Van Gogh would think of it...

Don McLean - Good!
NOFX - Bad!

can we just go over the fact that NOFX sucks ass?

Sometimes a person covers a song and it becomes something incredible.... See Johnny Cash's version of Hurt....

Then there are times like these....

I'm afraid to hear what NOFX did with the song. I really like the original, if its as bad as you say then perhaps its best if I don't...

EDIT: Guess I never fully realized it was about Van Gogh.... I know the thought popped into my head at one point but just never completely registered

Starry Night
Oil on canvas
73.0 x 92.0 cm.
Saint-Rémy: June, 1889

I probably wouldn't have known either if my mum wasn't an art teacher and one of her favorite artists being Van Gogh. Here are the first two stanzas from the song:

Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

I'd dig up a painting of daffodils but I'm sure no one cares! Not saying NOFX suck just that this cover does... I think Van Gogh was a manic depressive, but I don't think manic like NOFX.

Um, NOFX produces a majority of good punk rock out there not to mention they have survived about 2 decades? They don't suck. Even their label rocks.

LoL. I so have that song=) They have covered a lot of songs... It's what punk rock does best(well one of the things.).

I have a comp from epitaph of covered 80s songs, it's great.=D

http://www.don-mclean.com/downloads/play.asp?p=44 original one

NOFX's is like, "Hey I'm so happy despite no one understanding my work nor being accepted by my peers. I'm so happy I'm willing to kill myself!"

Doesn't help that it was in a major key (I think?) I guess they didn't capture the essence of what the lyrics were about is what I'm saying. Maybe that was the idea, I don't know.

One good punk cover I can think of is "I believe I can fly" by Me first and the Gimmie Gimmies (waaaay better than R. Kelly's). Oh and the another one they did, Wild World (http://www.fatwreck.com/empee/50125.mp3) was a good cover of a folky type song done in a punk style. Can't say I liked Cat Steven's crap but this cover was good. So it can be done, just gotta pick a good song :p

me first and the gimmie gimmies, all they do IS remake other songs. each album has a differnt theme. i forget how different they are but like one is all broadway. another was like, remakes of the sound of music songs with other types like that i think. somewhere overtherainbow, very very awsome remake. it was actually used inthe intro for taxicab confessions on HBO :D

as for vincent its different. how many other bands would actually consider redoing that song?? i liked the original personally. i knew what it was about and its a very sad song. not to mention its really really really old when they did it. how did you only hear it now?? thats the equivalent of someone coming on here, OMG i just played Quake II, that was a shitty game. doesn't compare to UT 2004. well yeah its like 5 or 6 years later! you can't compare shit back then. so for its time, it was a great song. now everyone remakes anything to be cool.

I only heard it now cause I'm not a big fan of NOFX, wasn't sure how old it was just know that I didn't like it :p

ps Quake > Quake 3 >>>>>>> Quake 2 (constipated rocket launchers suck)...

Me first and the Gimmie Gimmies rule. Thats the Punk Coverband Fat Mike is in. Their version of Nothing Compares by Sinead O'connor is the own.

If Dephton says Perfect Circle is punk rock I'll puke.

NOFX isn't one of my absolute favorite punk rock bands... I do own a few of their albums from high school. I was mostly just saying they definately don't suck=p

Not many can make it living in the music business for over two decades and make a *good* living at it ... these old geezers have=p Not to mention the influence they have had on other punk rock/ Indie bands... even some rock you hear on the radio. So when you measure it in terms of that.. they don't suck!=D

Diaf, yes... I'm very fickle;)

nofx is sort of like FFXI. they sell gazillions of their product which is amazingly great and gather a very strong fan base, but there is still a large number who hate them with a passion (upon hearing the name NOFX or Final Fantasy XXXXXXX without actually trying the product). but despite that they will, and are very successful no matter what ever they come out with. people will buy.

then again people who think EQ is a great game shouldnt be one to judge anything :D thats like asking Iraqi terrorists to give their thoughts on our constitution. or what they thought of Zelda for the NES. it just doesn't work!

Just don't find much antiestabishment sentiments in punk rock nowadays, or maybe I'm just not listening to the write people. Or I'm just not listening... I'd rather call it fast-paced rock than anything else, still good music.

There's the whole... pop-punk movement(Yellowcard, Blink, MXPX) from recent years.. but I wouldn't clump NOFX into that.

Listen to some Bad religion, Teg.=) Old, new... it's all good.

AFI is still my all time favorite band. Seeing them preform live is awesome. They ahve changed thier style immensely over the past 10 years... I'm kinda on the fence about it all. To not develope your style and explore as an artist(music or otherwise) is somewhat of a contradiction... So, I don't think I'll judge either way. =D

Oh I use to like Bad Religion, more so than NOFX but they faded into non-existance here for some reason a few years ago.

is that NOFX in the "i beleive i can fly" video?

Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies Azure, Mali says it's "Fat Mike" in that band, so if he's in NOFX I guess it is, kinda.

As for artists exploring... Faith No More use to be like my favorite band early 90's to mid then they released some shit album they called album of the year, call it quits and Mike Patton goes off to his old band Mr Bungle. I bet him joining FNM was all a grand plot to get some exposure for himself so he could get a contract for his other band!

So what's up with bands changing their music and deciding to go all avante garde, obsure and bs that makes them loose 90% of their listeners?! Now all the projects he's in make music which would go well with 20's silent horror films with scary clowns in them. All I can say is what a waste of a great voice...

what about catch-22, thats a good punk/ska band.

Incubus>all!

Not saying they are anything close to punk-rock, more beat-poet funk(y) rock if i may say so. They are one of the few bands, I think, at the moment who have refined and experimented with different types of music. Their past 5 albums have had a different sound, morning view being the most pop like, but still damn good i might add. Way off topic of this thread but I just wanted to mention a good band who have been around for a good 8 years and seem to not throw out the same canned music shit that have been drilling my head as of late.

Damn, hah haven't heard this one in a while!
Warst du schon mal in der Wueste? Schon mal den Tod gesehen?
Hunderttausend Kinder sterben fuer Brot

and what do you guys think of http://www.spiderbait.com.au/mp3/blackbetty.mp3? I haven't or can't recall hearing the original. Can't say I like the country "twang" banjo (or whatever it is!) sound loop otherwise it's good.
